Ensuring Your Success
As with any and every online marketplace that has or will ever exist, participation comes with some very specific fine print. Being as pro-human and transparent as possible, below is an explanation of what to plan for and why. Our goal is to enable and accelerate your success, while enabling ourselves to continue to do so.
The Facts: The current sitewide marketplace commission is 7.5% and whereas we intend to (and will) keep it low, it will likely evolve into a category-based system in the future.
The Explanation: Commission is always painfully awkward to bring up, but we need some form of income to keep servers and services running. The commission itself gets split three ways. The first 2.5% goes to any affiliate associated with an order. The second 2.5% goes to [dephoro] Organization to help fund charity campaigns. The last 2.5% goes to us, the Marketplace. If no affiliate is associated with an order, we get 5% instead of 2.5%.
The Facts: We work with a third-party tax service (Avalara) to ensure our marketplace, and the merchants it serves, remain in compliance with the constantly evolving federal tax law.
The Explanation: Legally, online marketplaces are very different than online stores. Marketplaces provide a service to stores, facilitating global sales. We have to monitor and remit merchant sales taxes on their behalf; hence, we ask merchants to provide tax information. Similarly, tax rates change along several lines like location and product category, so we hired a dedicated team of professionals to help us (and you) navigate this web of regulations.
The Facts: You can opt to use our drop shipping service or handle shipping yourself, but both have fees attached and that’s our concern.
The Explanation: As stated, our goal is to ensure you succeed. Shipping is a vital part of e-commerce, but the fees associated with it cut into profit margins. We want to ensure you account for these charges by planning your product pricing with them in mind. The marketplace itself is integrated with Printful for prints and shipping, but using Printful is by no means required. We are working towards integrating a greater variety of drop shipping solutions for your convenience.
